2023 Tesla Model Y long-term owner review

Short test drives flatter the Model Y. Living with one for a couple of years is a better test — and it reveals both why owners love them and what genuinely frustrates them.

What is brilliant

Running costs. Charging at home overnight, particularly with solar, makes the fuel bill almost disappear compared with a petrol SUV. There are no oil changes, no spark plugs and no transmission services, and the brakes last a long time because regenerative braking does most of the slowing.

Space is the other pleasant surprise. The Model Y is genuinely practical — a huge boot, a front boot, a flat floor and a wide rear seat. Performance is effortless in every version, and the Supercharger network remains the easiest long-distance charging experience in Australia.

What takes adjusting to

The minimalist interior divides people. Almost every function lives in the central screen, including the wipers and mirrors, and there is no instrument cluster in front of you. Most owners adapt within a few weeks; some never warm to it.

The ride is firm. On smooth roads it feels planted and quiet, but on patched suburban streets it can be busy, especially on the larger wheels. Road noise from coarse Australian surfaces is more noticeable than in a comparable petrol SUV, because there is no engine to mask it.

Build quality and service

Panel gaps and trim alignment vary between cars — check any used example carefully in good light. Service is different to a traditional dealer experience: much is handled through the app, and mobile technicians can do many jobs at your home, which owners generally rate highly once they get used to it.

Battery and range

Range degradation over a couple of years is typically modest and much less dramatic than the internet suggests. Expect a small early drop then a slow, gentle decline. Real-world range in winter, at highway speed or with a roof box will be well under the official figure — that is true of every EV.

Verdict

If you can charge at home, the Model Y makes an outstanding family car with genuinely low running costs. If you cannot charge at home, or you regularly tow, look carefully at whether it fits your life before you fall for the acceleration.
